Of all the theaters I’ve seen, Minack Theatre on the coast in Cornwall was easily the one with the most magical location. What a beautiful setting for an outdoor theater! As you can see in this print, the stage and seating has an organic hand-made quality that’s as magical as the location.

Minack Theatre was the brainchild of one woman, Rowena Cade. Ms. Cade dreamed up and built much of the theater over the course of decades with the help of only a few people. Most of the work was with her own hands. The first production on her property was Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1929. It was such a success that she began to work on the cliff hugging theater in this Cornwall print. The first production on this stage was The Tempest. I can’t imagine a more magical place to see Shakespere’s plays! Can you? One of my only laments about my time in Cornwall was that I missed theater season. I got to see this beautiful outdoor stage but not in action as it were.

I took this photo from the stage area of Minack Theatre looking towards the seats and balconies. I used a fisheye lens that I feel allowed me to really take in all those natural lines so well. One of my fellow travelers is standing mid-stage looking up, which really gives a human perspective and scale to this incredibly beautiful setting. We may not have seen Minack Theatre in action but we did experience standing on that magical stage and it was truly a wonder.
