My time in Sorrento on the beautiful Italian coast was short. I had read it was a great staging ground to see Pompeii and get a taste of the coast. And it definitely lived up to those expectations. On our last full day as we headed down to the Marina Piccola for a brief jaunt to Capri, I so wished we could have extended our stay in this beautiful part of Italy. Just look at the picturesque city of Sorrento! The historic city center is up on those cliffs. The beautiful building you see perched at the top of the cliffs is the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, an early 19th century hotel And I would say from the exterior at least that grand is an excellent adjective! Wouldn’t you?
Those beautiful dawn skies over the buildings of Sorrento haunt me still. It was such an incredible sight to look back upon from the port. We had climbed down the twisting stairways that link the city center of Sorrento with the port and as you can tell from the view, it was an amazing if tiring experience. This picturesque Sorrento print is based on photos from that morning as we awaited the ferry. And this print very much reflects not just Sorrento but what I experienced as a whole along the Italian coast. Whenever I see pictures of buildings climbing a rugged scenic coast like this, I know it must be Italy. There’s a rich flavor of the Mediterranean world in this print.
We only got a taste of Sorrento and the Italian coast, but it was like a small cup of gelato. It was wonderful while it lasted and left me wanting more! I look back at this print and other scenes from the Italian coast and it feels like a long-ago dream rather than an actual experience. Doesn’t this view of the Excelsior Vittoria perched on the Sorrento cliffs have an air of a fantasy to it? If it didn’t really exist, an artist somewhere would have had to have made it up. It has the air of an old travel poster asking you to explore the Italian coast doesn’t it?
