Description

I hope that I never reach a point in my life where ancient prehistoric sites like this standing stone pictured in County Kerry, Ireland, fail to move me. There’s just something magical about being in the presence of something made by the hands of long-ago humans and pondering just what it might have meant to them.

I haven’t been able to uncover much detail about this standing stone near the Slea Head Road. Apparently it’s known as a Clogher Head Megalith. Our tour guide related an, I think, tongue in cheek tale of it being a fertility object. Although there could certainly be truth to it!

Whatever the motives of the people who erected this standing stone so long ago, clearly it held meaning to them, and the landscape it inhabited was special to them. I think in a lot of ways understanding the landscape these ancient monuments inhabit is as important as the structures themselves. People didn’t just build these in a random location. Standing stones in Neolithic Europe were often moved great distances.

And gazing at the ice and golden sun that winter afternoon, I felt like I could sense just a bit of the reason behind their placing this stone in this amazing coastal spot so long ago… Doesn’t it feel like an extra special piece of Irish earth to you?

This art print was captured just before the sunset on the first day of a new year. No doubt one of many beautiful days that have gone before, but nonetheless from an artistic perspective, we couldn’t have timed it better as the warm light was simply perfect.

Have you had the pleasure of seeing this same standing stone on a visit to the Ring of Kerry? Or are you simply enamored with anything ancient and mysterious?
