Winding Country Roads of Connemara – Irish Landscape Art

Ireland was a country full of highlights. I don’t think I could have chosen a better starting point for my travels after starting my life as a full-time artist. In my mind, I still have a hard time picking favorite places or images from my time in Ireland. Each scene and each place had a life of its own and a different meaning to me. Yet I definitely look at my wandering in Connemara as a highlight. The rural Irish countryside absolutely fascinated me. There was a sense of seeing the very foundations of the place here.

Outside of cities and villages wandering the wild roads of Connemara, I felt like I was seeing what the rest of Ireland was built on. Perhaps the foundations of the Irish psyche as well? Did you ever have that feeling on some lonesome road? The feeling that you were seeing things a bit more clearly?

There was every reason to gripe during my days in Connemara. The weather oscillated wildly between sun shining and rain pouring. And yet, there was loving every minute of it, walking along those wild Irish roads with mostly sheep for companions. That’s how strong the magic of a Connemara landscape is! The rain didn’t matter. I knew the skies would open up again and I’d see a view like this! I loved the contrast in this landscape between the rust colored foreground dotted with sheep grazing and the fantastic sky over the hills in the distance!

Roads were also somewhat symbolic for me at the time. I was in uncharted waters in my own life. And whenever I saw a road vanishing into the distance like this one, I couldn’t help seeing it as a metaphor for life. The road disappears into the horizon. Where does it end? Similarly the future is unknown, but enjoy the view on the way down life’s road!
