Description
I spotted this little cottage that probably started life as a "shotgun" house on a side street in my hometown years ago. It's one of those buildings that won't be around a lot longer and those always catch my attention. What you see here doesn't really resemble reality. Perhaps it once looked like this. Perhaps it never did. Hard to say, but this is where my imagination went. I stayed true to the rustic simplicity at least. This is vernacular architecture at its best, built simply to function.
The woman mostly in silhouette in the doorway is another story entirely. I have an old black and white photograph my grandfather took of my uncle as an infant. He's being held on the side steps of their home in south Alabama. Although that's the subject of the photo, in the background, you can see my grandmother's hands and legs through the screen door. She was keeping watch over her wee one. Although the two houses bare no resemblance, that was always a powerful image in my mind. Thus the idea found its way here.
