Description
Historic Big Bethel AME rising above the streets of Sweet Auburn in the heart of old Atlanta. Big Bethel AME Church was founded in 1847 in Marthasville which eventually came to be known as Atlanta. So it's a church with a history as old as the city. It's the oldest African American church in Sweet Auburn and was where the first classes for Morris Brown met. The current building was constructed in the early 1920's after a fire destroyed the old church.
Artwork based on photos taken for the US Government for the Historic American Building Survey by James R. Lochkart in 1979.
