Description
Glastonbury is more than just the site of a major music festival. The town itself was rather cool, but what I'll never forget about my brief time in Glastonbury was climbing Glastonbury Tor, a great hill in the midst of the modern day city.
Glastonbury Tor is quite a storied place. The lone disembodied tower that graces the top of that long climb is all that remains of a 14th century church destroyed during the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539.
Where the written history is fascinating, it's the myths that I find so fascinating. Some claim that this great hill is none other than Avalon of the Arthurian legends. You might be thinking, hey, Avalon was an island, and long ago, the Tors of Somerset were islands. The marshy waters were drained away by farmers long ago leaving hills behind.
Interestingly, you may have seen the BBC finale for the Merlin series actually shows Glastonbury Tor in the modern day, a nod to its prominence in the misty legends of England.
