Description
I've had the pleasure of visiting the ruins of Chichen Itza in the Yucatan state of Mexico twice now, but it's that first visit that stands out most in my mind. Standing in the hot tropical sun in May and looking up at the Temple of Kukulkan, I was a little in awe at the persistence it must have taken to build anything, never mind something as intricate as this Mayan pyramid.
The main pyramid at Chichen Itza is often known by its Spanish name El Castillo, and it's one of the first things you see when entering the site. It was also the last thing I saw on leaving, which was when I took this particular photo of the top of the great pyramid. The light striking it at that moment and the direction of the sun was something I couldn't have predicted. And it made me happy that I had gotten a later start than intended that morning. I might have missed this beautiful light otherwise! Wouldn't that have been a pity?
Note: the Mayan Ruins at Chichen Itza are a UNESCO designated World Heritage site. And in recent years Chichen Itza has been dubbed one of the wonders of the modern world.
