I've had the good fortune of being able to visit more than a handful of UNESCO designated World Heritage Sites. And at the great bulk of them, it's entirely an experience of being awestruck. To put it mildly, it's a very Indiana-Jones-like experience to stand among the ruins of an ancient temple in the jungle!
And I think it was that thought process that influenced the time-worn sepia tone edit of this photo from the Mayan Ruins of Palenque. I was trying to capture that feeling from the golden age of archaeological expeditions when people began to see images from far-away and ancient places for the first time.
And for many of us today, although a place like Palenque is within reach, that dream of being the first to discover a lost ruin is the stuff of dreams. And yet, as I stood there at Palenque looking towards the ruins of the ancient Temple of the Inscriptions, daydream mode was very much activated. I imagined sleeping in the ruins of these old temples on a long ago expedition... magic...
