Description
One of the things I've learned over the years is that sometimes the best picture is behind you. And that was precisely the case of this scene in Glastonbury several years ago. I was with a group making our way back to the parking lot where we were parked when a little burst of sunlight came through the clouds ahead of us. When I glanced over my shoulder, this is the view Is aw, moody skies and this beautiful and massive church tower reaching into the British skies!
I had just enough time to take a photo but it wasn't until I was home that I had a chance to even find out the name of that beautiful gothic church.
It turned out to be the Church of St John The Baptist. There's apparently been a church on this spot in Glastonbury since at least Norman times, but the current church, which I believe is an example of Perpendicular Gothic Architecture was built in the 15th century. It also had a restoration in the 19th, when the Gothic Revival was under way. It's entirely possible that the result is a romanticized version of what was there before, but this old English church is such a beauty I'll forgive the Victorians their artistic license!
