Description
There's a certain amount of random chance to any photograph taken outside of a studio. But there was a tiny bit of planning on my part when capturing this beautiful moment at the monastic ruins of Ross Errilly Friary in County Galway, in the west of Ireland.
I visited these ruins on a tour bus in winter. There were only a small handful of people along with me taking in these wilds of Connemara. The people with me were in another part of the old medieval monastery. I happened to overhear birds shuffling about in some hidden spot in the walls. I thought just maybe my colleagues in the next room over might startle the birds out of hiding and I framed this shot and waited.
It turned out to be a precious few seconds wait before the birds took to the skies, and my attempt to capture their flight paid off as you can see by their flight across the skies over the roofless monastery.
I did think I might get this chance, but truly it was very much a moment of chance. There was just as much likelihood that the birds would have flown in a totally different direction. And this beautiful scene would be pretty without them, but with them, well, it's much more magical to me, how about you?
Ross Errilly Friary or Mainistir Ros Oirialaigh in County Galway is designated a National Monument of the Republic of Ireland. Although it sits in the middle of a farmer's pastures, it's accessible to the public.
