There are some cars that are just equated to fun or cheerful, and one of my favorite things about Mexico is being able to see so many classic Volkswagen Beetle's on the streets. These old classic were manufactured in Mexico long after they fell out of production in most places. The last ones rolled off the assembly lines in 2003. So, when you wander the streets of Mexican cities and encounter one of these iconic cars, it may not really be as old as you think!
This one was encountered on the streets of Merida during my visit to the Yucatan back in 2007. I loved the vivid pop of blue against the blue-green stucco on the walls beyond but there are a lot of neat repeating details like the little red heart in the window which is repeated in the bars of the window beyond and the hand-prints in the dusty car hood.
But in the end, it's about a cheerful blue VW beetle, of course. I always look at this print with a smile. I just can't help it, can you?
