I have little doubt that if I visited Rome for long, or heavens, lived there, I'd stand and gaze at the ancient Colosseum quite often. It's such an evocative fragment of that long lost empire.
This is based on a photo taken on one of my last days in Rome. The golden light of the setting sun that day was particularly reminiscent of the light of a golden age. It was coincidence, but there were trails in the sky from passing planes. I really liked that mixture of ancient marvel with modern marvel!
This angle of the ancient Flavian Amphitheatre was the one I favored most. It gave both a flavor of what was and what remains. I find it fascinating that we very nearly had nothing left. After the collapse of Rome, the relics of its glory days were scavenged. The ancient Colosseum became little more than a large marble quarry. Most of the ruined state of it today is owed to hundreds of years of it being mined for materials. Thanks to one forward-thinking Pope who knew soon not...
