Artist's Description

Based on an old black and white photo taken for the Historic American Buildings Survey by the US Government. This is the corner of the old Equitable building, widely regarded as Atlanta's first skyscraper. It stood on Edgewood Avenue in downtown Atlanta from its construction in 1892 until it was demolished in 1971.

Based on other photos in the series, I believe the original photo I based this artwork on was taken either in the late 1960's or maybe even the year the building was razed to make way for a plaza in front of the new Trust Company Bank Building, completed also in 1971.

It may not be possible to save every old building in a city, but it seems a shame to have lost Atlanta's first skyscraper in the name of progress. The building was designed by the Chicago firm of Burnham and Root, one of the leading firms of the Chicago school of Architecture, well known for Commercial designs like this around the turn of the 20th century.
