Sometimes the most unexpected objects can become the subjects of artwork. A fire hydrant might seem incredibly utilitarian to many of us. It’s one of those utilitarian things that is mainly in the domain of firefighters. Yet when I saw this colorful fire hydrant on the streets of Asheville, I stopped and took notice.

I loved the bright colors and the beautiful light the moment I rounded the corner onto this street. In short order, I found myself spending time hunting for just the right way to frame this scene. It’s also one of those moments when you suddenly realize exactly how strange you must look to other people as you wander around and around a bright yellow fire hydrant with your camera in hand. In a city like Asheville, where the arts are embraced, maybe I seemed right at home? Or perhaps not!

I suppose it’s probably fanciful to think that the arts in fact played a part in the vivid fire hydrants of Asheville. I’m sure the gold, green, and red markings have some sort of meaning about the water pressure or some such practical thing. Yet it’s certainly eye catching even if has some practical meaning to the firefighters of Asheville. Whatever the case, for me that colorful fire hydrant was just too bright and cheerful a subject to pass by without having a pretty print to show for it.
